What I’ve been up to…

Well, not much really…this working thing is for the birds!! ‘Real’ dispatcher is back today, so just had to go in for a couple hours and do my monthly billing before we leave tomorrow.

I did manage to whip this up this morning before I left…

I wanted a small purse to wear when we fly. Just big enough for my passport, a small wallet, my phone, etc…without all the ‘garp’ I usually carry around. This is about 8X8″, made from two fat quarters and a magnetic snap. Took about an hour…I like it!!

Another project I will work on when I get home…I am issuing another challenge to my guild members. We had a bunch of old fabric that had been donated to the guild. It was stored at the church where we meet in several boxes and plastic tubs. Four of us went through all the fabric, laid out several ‘focus’ fabrics, then matched the rest up to coordinate with the focus fabrics. Anything that was not ‘quilt quality’ was passed to another group to use and a few pieces were relegated to ‘pet pads’ for the local ARL.

We then put the piles of coordinating fabrics, along with a large piece for backing if we had one, into a large paper grocery bag and stapled them shut.

These will be dispersed at our annual retreat this weekend. The challenge: to make a quilt from the fabric in your grocery sack.  Fabric from the quilter’s stash can be added, but they must use as much as possible from their bag.

We will be displaying quilts in a local coffee house this fall, and these quilts will all hang on one wall with a box where people can vote for ‘viewer’s choice’. The winner will receive a $100 gift certificate to our LQS!!

I chose a bag the day we made them since I won’t be attending the retreat. Here is what was in my bag:

Each bag will also have a list of ‘rules’: ie: use as much fabric as possible; you can add some of your own but you don’t have to; take a picture of the fabric before you start so we can see what you were working with…etc.

There will also be a 4X6″ index card for the piecer to fill out with their name, the name of their quilt, their first impression when they opened their sack; why they chose the pattern that they did; what inspiration(s) did they use to create their quilt; and what charity they would like it donated to when we take them down.

I am really looking forward to both the reaction from guild members AND to see the finished quilts this fall!

Here is what I have come up with so far on mine….I fussy  cut the horse fabric into squares and will frame them with the fabric on the left/top of the pile using the bright pink and gold as cornerstones. These ‘blocks’ will be offset using the green/white pin dot at the far right.  The three fabrics in the center will somehow become borders, and the large piece that they are all laying on is for the backing. Wish me luck!!

The Downy company is participating in the Quilts for Kids organization, and will send you a kit to make a kids quilt from fabrics that were originally enroute to the landfill.

You can sign up to receive a kit here  http://www.quiltsforkids.org/patterns/request/. They encourage you to make a second quilt from your own stash and send it along as well.

I ordered a kit and it came today. Isn’t this fabric adorable?!?!?!

They include the pattern (this one is a simple four patch) and a label. Can’t wait to get to work on this!!

But for now, guess I had best get back to packing. The couple we are traveling with will pick us up at 5:20AM tomorrow..
